Making strategy games work on a phone
Strategy games live or die by their interface, and a phone screen is a cruel place to display a lot of numbers. The ones that succeed, like Tideborn Command, are ruthless about hierarchy — they show you what matters now and tuck the rest a tap away.
Pinch-to-zoom is essential, and a clean overview mode saves you from squinting. I've dropped otherwise good games simply because I couldn't read the state of the board at a glance. If I have to zoom in to make every decision, the flow is gone.
Pacing helps too. Turn-based or slow real-time strategy suits mobile far better than twitchy micro, because you can pause, think, and act without your thumbs blocking half the map. The genre works best when it leans into thoughtfulness.
If you love strategy but keep bouncing off mobile versions, look specifically for legible UI and generous zoom before anything else. Depth is common; readability is rare.
